Located just outside Williamston on U.S. Highway 13/17, the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge is
home to more than 191 species of birds and many other animals such as otters, deer and beaver. It was
established in 1989 to protect and enhance wetlands and natural habitats. Two refuge tracts offer an
informal trail system where you can hike, birdwatch and observe wildlife. These are accessible from
U.S. 17 North. The refuge is open to the public free of charge daily during daylight hours. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service owns and manages 18,500 acres of refuge. The refuge runs more than three miles wide along U.S. 17, but spans 72 river miles. Besides the tracts accessible by land, there are other tracts within the refuge which are only accessible by boat. There are public boat ramps in Hamilton, Williamston, Jamesville and Plymouth. In addition to hiking and birding, the refuge allows permit hunts during the fall and winter. Deer, small game, waterfowl and turkey hunts are conducted on the refuge. Permits are issued by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission through a random computer drawing.
