HYDE COUNTY'S HIGHWAY TO HISTORY

Octagon House Need an excuse for a Sunday afternoon drive in the country? Hyde County's Talking Houses and Historic Places tour may just be the answer! Visitors to the county can couple a history lesson with a quiet drive on the road less traveled.

The Greater Hyde County Chamber of Commerce has set a precedence in northeast North Carolina by adapting an innovative way of telling the county's history using AM radio broadcasters at several historic attractions. Signs direct visitors at specific sites to tune their AM radio to a pre-selected frequency for further information. Visitors are welcome to enter the site if it is open; otherwise, they can sit in the comfort of their vehicles and learn about the heritage of the area.

A brief history of the county is outlined in a brochure available at local businesses throughout the county and at the Department of Transportation Rest Area in Engelhard. The brochure also contains a map which indicates the eight mainland and two Ocracoke sites on the tour.
